It's a great moment for your friend as it is for you because it's his wedding and you have been chosen the best man for the first time ever. Congratulations. But if you are still not enjoying the moment it must be the speech that you need to give at the wedding reception.

Well, you are not the lone best man who has to deal with this problem. Anybody who struggles when it comes to giving a speech in public would be skeptical of making one. However, it's a situation you can avoid. You must make a speech and that's exactly why you should get preparing for it - the earlier the better. It's good to see that you have taken your first step already. It always help if you do some research to get the ideas for your speech.

Don't worry about making your best man speech funny or light-hearted at the moment. First get the outline of your speech done. There are a lot of things common to all best man speeches. The introduction lines, telling something about the groom and the bride, sharing a couple of interesting facts or anecdotes about the groom (or the couple) and then ending the speech by toasting the couple - that's what your best man speech in a nutshell.

Now if you have enough sense of humor your speech would automatically become funny. Humor makes any speech sound better - so, even if you happen to be a serious guy, it's time to open up a bit and present something that would amuse the audience. Remember wedding a happy occasion and everybody loves to enjoy their time here.

There are certain “Do's and Don'ts” related to such best man toasts but they are so obvious that unless you do something really weird you are not going to break the rules for sure. I think it's needless to say that you must be polite and must not hurt anybody's feelings while making your speech and stay sober until you've given the speech and so on.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that once you have got the speech written you could automatically deliver it fluently at the reception party. Getting your speech written and not practicing enough is as disastrous as not getting the speech written at all. If you are an average speaker, believe me, you aren't going to remember all the points and your speech would end it disaster. Practicing the speech is the ultimate key to accomplish it.
